Utility Companies

Typically, within a week of closing, you’ll need to transfer all utilities into your name. It’s important not to wait until after closing, as the sellers may choose to turn off utilities before the closing date, which could result in reconnect fees or additional charges. To avoid any disruptions, make sure you handle the transfer ahead of time. This page will also serve as a helpful resource for paying future utility bills.

Buying in Albuquerque:

You won’t need to transfer the water bill into your name, as the water bill stays with the physical address. Your Title Company will settle the final water bill for the seller, and you’ll see this reflected on your first bill.

Buying in Rio Rancho:

After closing, you will need to transfer the water bill into your name. To do this, visit the Rio Rancho Water Company with your closing folder to complete the transfer. Your Title Company will settle the final water bill for the seller, and you’ll see this reflected on your first water bill. Make sure to take care of this transfer promptly to avoid any interruptions in service.

Buying elsewhere:

Check with your Realtor to find out how the water transfer is handled at your new home. In some cases, it may be as simple as calling, transferring online, or you might need to visit the office in person. Your Realtor will be happy to gather the necessary information for you and guide you through the process, ensuring everything is taken care of smoothly.

Also, don’t forget to contact the US Postal Service to change your address and ensure you receive a mailbox key.

If your new home is in a community with a Homeowners Association (HOA), it’s a good idea to reach out to them for gate codes or any other important information. You’ll find this information in your final paperwork, which will be emailed to you by our Transaction Coordinator. If you have any questions, feel free to call your Realtor. The Bigelow Team is always happy to assist and ensure a smooth transition into your new home!
